FAQs
Which lesson length is best for me?
Please consult with the studio if you are unsure about lesson length. Here is a general guide:
| Young students in first 2 years of study | 30 minutes (weekly) |
| —Beginning older/adult students —RCM 1, 2, 3, 4 | 45 minutes (weekly) |
| RCM 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 | 60 minutes (weekly) |
Do we need a piano to get started? Which other materials are required?
Yes, students need a piano or an 88-key fully-weighted touch sensitive keyboard available for daily practice. The instrument should ideally be located in a quiet room away from distractions and interruptions.
A piano must be tuned and maintained regularly.
A metronome (or an app with a metronome feature) is also encouraged.
Piano books are usually picked up by students (in consultation with your teacher) from local music stores Long and McQuade or Tapestry Music. Books can also be ordered online from the RCM Shop. Sheet music can be downloaded from SheetMusicPlus.
Online Lessons. All students are required to have access to equipment that would enable them to have their lessons online and must be prepared to transition to online lesson at any time if the need arises. We use FaceTime (preferred) and Zoom. Students always have the option of switching to an online lesson.
Do students have to play in recitals?
Our goal with recitals is to create a safe and encouraging community experience for music students in which they can share music with friends and family! Although all students are encouraged to perform, we recognize it is not for everyone. Performing will always remain optional.
How much practicing is needed?
Students are encouraged to practice 5 times or more per week. For beginners, 15 minutes a day is sufficient, building to 30 minutes by the end of first year. Intermediate students should aim for an hour per day, while it is standard for advanced students to practice 1 to 2 hours per day.

The Royal Conservatory of Music Certificate Program is a well-established Canadian music learning system offering a structured approach to student progress, with clearly laid out goals for development of technique, musicianship, repertoire and theory.
We have prepared many students for piano and theory exams, from Prep A to Level 10. Exams are not required, but they can contribute to a student’s confidence and sense of accomplishment! Please be in touch to find out more information.
